11/21/2023 0 Comments Suns vs nuggets tonightI fully expect the Suns to take control of this game, and even if the Nuggets don't fully rest their starters, it would not be a surprise if their minutes are limited like when Jokic played just 25 minutes on Tuesday against the Rockets. If anything, this is a good opportunity for them to figure out which of their non-starters are deserving of playoff minutes moving forward. This is the final of four matchups between these clubs, with Denver owning a 2-1. The Nuggets simply have nothing to play for tonight, and there is no real reason for them to show any of the schemes they may deploy against the Suns in a potential Western Conference Semifinals matchup. A Western Conference affair has the Phoenix Suns (44-35) hosting the Denver Nuggets (52-27) on Thursday night. While the motivation for tonight is more related to team chemistry, I expect the Suns to perform well with this lineup. This team can score at any level and has been strong defensively as well. When Durant is on the floor, the Suns have posted a +14.8 Point Differential, and their intended starting lineup of Chris Paul, Devin Booker, Josh Okogie, Durant and Deandre Ayton has a +20.1 Point Differential as well. The Suns have been incredible with Durant and look to continue their undefeated run with him in the lineup. It's been at 1.5 the last few games, and he's exceeded that total in six of seven games alongside Durant. I will be targeting Devin Booker's First Quarter Assists Prop tonight whenever it opens. I wrote at length about the Suns and Kevin Durant's fit in my Weekly Player Props Forecast. The Suns are likely locked into the 4-seed in the West however, with Kevin Durant returning from injury, there remains a desire to play and garner more on-court chemistry amongst the starters. That is one of the worst sample sizes in the league and would be worse than the San Antonio Spurs on their full-season numbers. The Nuggets have a -13.1 Point Differential and score just 105.8 points per 100 while allowing 118.8. However, when he's off the floor, this drops precipitously. When Jokic is on the floor, the Nuggets have a +13.4 Point Differential and score 125.6 points per 100 possessions, per Cleaning the Glass. Surviving the non-Jokic minutes has been major problem that continues to plague Denver. They have been the best team in the West so far this season and have a +2.7 Adjusted Net Rating on the entire season, which has been buoyed by the league's fifth-best offense ( 117.1 Adjusted Offensive Rating). Tonight's game comes down to motivation for the Nuggets. On Friday, the Denver Nuggets will fight it out against the Phoenix Suns in a Western Conference playoff contest at 10:00 p.m. and Bruce Brown at the time of this writing, but it still would not be surprising if their minutes are managed and we see a bit more of Christian Braun (who has been awesome in an expanded role). It appears that the Nuggets will play Aaron Gordon, Michael Porter Jr. The Nuggets have listed Nikola Jokic (calf), Jamal Murray (thumb) and Zeke Nnaji (knee) as questionable for tonight's contest. Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles. The Nuggets have clinched the top seed in the Western Conference and may elect to rest their starters, or at least not play them their full rotations. It's been fun to watch him take on that responsibility every night." But obviously Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is leading that charge. "Whether it's Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander) in OKC, (Jordan) Clarkson tonight, (Desmond) Bane in Memphis - no one guards anybody 1-on-1 in this league. "It's not that other guys aren't defending well, but he's just doing it at a very elite level right now against some great players, guys that can get going and score in bunches," Malone said. Caldwell-Pope has won the team's "defensive player of the game chain" in all four of Denver's games this season. ![]() The Nuggets could try to slow down Edwards by assigning Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to guard him. Golden State is -115 on the moneyline, while Phoenix is -105. Karl-Anthony Towns (15.7 points, 10.0 rebounds) and Rudy Gobert (14.3 points, 13.3 rebounds) each are averaging double-doubles. The Warriors are -1.5 against the spread, while the Suns are +1.5. ![]() ![]() If we just do that and concentrate on the easy stuff, I think we can withstand runs and put a run on them."Īnthony Edwards leads the Timberwolves with 25.3 points per game to go along with 7.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists. "The easy reads, not the hero plays, not the hero ball, not the hero pass, just the simple one. "The easy play would have won us the game," he said.

11/20/2023 0 Comments Scotus prayer decision![]() The school district first learned about Kennedy’s behavior in September of 2015, when an opposing coach spoke to the high school principal about it. One parent eventually complained to the school district that his son “felt compelled to participate,” despite the fact that he is an atheist, because the student feared “ he wouldn’t get to play as much if he didn’t participate.” And, while there’s no evidence that he ever ordered a student to kneel with him when he performed a religious ceremony on the 50-yard line, he did not discourage students from joining him, either, and a majority of the students on his team eventually did so.Īt least some students felt pressured to participate in these prayer sessions, even though they did not share Kennedy’s religious beliefs. Coach Kennedy turned his public school’s football games into a culture-war battlefieldĪs mentioned above, Kennedy spent much of his coaching career behaving like a preacher, holding public prayer sessions for students - many of whom Kennedy wielded authority over. There is a very real risk, in other words, that the Court could use this case to upend 60 years of established law. ![]() The Court has only grown more conservative since then, and it has treated “religious liberty” cases brought by conservative Christian litigants as its highest priority since Republicans gained a supermajority on the Court in 2020. ![]() Three years ago, during an earlier phase of the Kennedy litigation, a total of four justices joined an opinion by Justice Samuel Alito, which suggested that the school district violated Kennedy’s constitutional rights by denying him the free speech right to pray while at work. Or, at least, it is well established for now that school officials cannot do this. It is well established that school officials cannot use their official government position to pressure students into religious exercise. And he appears to have actively stoked religious divisions. His actions pressured students into joining him in a religious activity. He endorsed a religious viewpoint while acting as a representative of the school district. But Kennedy’s actions violate any of these competing legal tests. The endorsement test, for example, disfavors many governmental displays of religious symbols that are permitted under the coercion test. There are important differences among these frameworks. In a 2006 opinion, Justice Stephen Breyer appeared to propose a third framework, arguing that the establishment clause of the First Amendment must be interpreted to prevent “ divisiveness based upon religion that promotes social conflict.” Weisman (1992), moreover, suggests that school-sponsored religious activities are inherently coercive - both because of the power school officials wield over students, and because of the peer pressure facing young people who visibly refuse to participate. Under the latter framework, endorsements are sometimes permitted, but not if they coerce individuals into a religious exercise. Under the first framework, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor wrote in 1984, government actions that endorse a particular religion or religious belief are disfavored because such endorsements send “ a message to nonadherents that they are outsiders, not full members of the political community, and an accompanying message to adherents that they are insiders, favored members of the political community.” Legal scholars refer to these competing frameworks by names such as the “ endorsement test” or the “ coercion test.” The Supreme Court’s decisions interpreting the First Amendment ban on “ an establishment of religion” have, at times, relied on different frameworks to determine if this ban is violated. The school initially tried to work with Kennedy to find ways to accommodate his religious convictions, but eventually placed him on leave after he stopped cooperating - and after one of his prayer sessions inspired a crowd of people to rush the field, knocking over members of the marching band and potentially endangering students. Initially, he did this alone, but after a few games students started to join him - until eventually a majority of his players joined him as well. After each game, while players and spectators were still present, Kennedy would walk out to the 50-yard line, kneel, and pray. Kennedy also engaged in other overt performances of his religion while he was coaching public school students. In this picture, from the school district’s Supreme Court brief, coach Joseph Kennedy holds one of his prayer sessions for public school students. 11/20/2023 0 Comments Iggy azalea sip it review![]() After the video was released, in response to a compliment about her hair, Azalea noted that she’s retiring the black wig. Over the course of the past year, however, as he took his show national as Governor Covid, the political dynamics in Cuomo’s own state were shifting. If anything, it burnished his reputation: Cuomo was a bully, but he was our bully. Two years ago, a Cuomo spokesman called three female state lawmakers in his party “fucking idiots.” In 2013, Cuomo created the Moreland Commission to investigate public corruption, only to shut it down abruptly less than a year later amid allegations that he had obstructed its work one of Cuomo’s closest associates, Joe Percoco, is serving a six-year term in federal prison on bribery charges.īut until now, none of this left a lasting mark on the governor. During his decade as governor, he has often strutted his thuggish paternalism while his top aides disparaged those who challenged him. That Andrew Cuomo is being characterized by fellow Democratic politicians as a lecherous tyrant who empowers his staff to threaten and intimidate should not, in some ways, come as a surprise. As of publication, dozens of Democratic members of the State Assembly and Senate, and 11 Democratic members of Congress, have called for his resignation. And since last month, when Cuomo’s former aide and candidate for Manhattan borough president, Lindsey Boylan, published an article on Medium accusing him of sexually harassing and kissing her against her will, five more women have come forward with tales of harassment, objectification, and inappropriate touching. Then the floodgates opened: His adversary Mayor Bill de Blasio called the bullying “classic Andrew Cuomo” state legislators Alessandra Biaggi and Yuh-Line Niou began openly suggesting that the governor’s hard-knuckled approach to politics is simply abusive. ![]() In February, liberal State Assembly member Ron Kim, who had criticized the governor in the wake of that report, spoke publicly about how Cuomo called him at home and threatened his career. In January, State Attorney General Letitia James released a report showing that his administration had underreported COVID deaths in nursing homes by as much as 50 percent. “This was, ‘You guys are bad at your job!’ And, ‘You’re mean!’ ”įour years later, and one year after he began his star turn as “America’s Governor,” steering his state through COVID via daily, reassuringly matter-of-fact press briefings, Andrew Cuomo’s third term as governor of New York is suddenly deeply imperiled. “This was not ha-ha funny,” Wertheimer explained. ![]() “We were saying to each other, ‘This is fucking weird,’ ” said one former staffer. The roast, said Wertheimer, entailed projecting photos of prominent state officials, “then asking Melissa if she knew their names, and her not knowing.” The newcomers whispered and huddled together while everyone else laughed. Partway through the bash, there was a roast of Cuomo’s top aide, Melissa DeRosa, then the chief of staff but soon to be promoted to secretary to the governor. Others hoped it could be a laboratory for ideas that might become a model for federal policy.Įarly in their employment, a few of these staffers were invited to a party at the governor’s mansion in Albany. Some saw New York State government as a bulwark against what they feared Trumpism would bring. He came on alongside almost 30 other new hires, many of whom had also worked for the outgoing president or on Hillary Clinton’s campaign and were seeking a progressive professional path through the Trump years. Joel Wertheimer took a job in Andrew Cuomo’s administration in February 2017, straight from his position in Barack Obama’s White House. |
